Here’s a little sneak peek behind the scenes – what it’s like to create digital art. For these pieces, I’m using a free trial of Paint Tool SAI, my handy dandy Huion H610Pro drawing tablet, and my trusty laptop.
I begin with a rough sketch (bright blue lines) to get the basic idea down and then draw over it with a more precise line (dark brown). Here’s what my Lutz painting looked like at first. This is the basic color underneath everything, before details get added – called “flat color”. In the corner, I have my reference photo to help me get everything just right. (Thanks, Meg McGuire, for the great shot!)A close-up of the flat coloring process on Avery. It gets messy, but that’s what the eraser is for! Many, many layers of color later, here’s the finished painting of Lutz, the famous FEI Haflinger who recently passed away.
